Gluing chipped plastic parts that are under stress is useless in most cases. The broken part will constantly fall off under load, even if you use very good expensive glue. In such a situation, it is better to use restoration by soldering nichrome wire. It allows you to make additional reinforcement of the part at the site of damage, preventing it from breaking again.

Tools and materials:

  • nichrome wire;
  • battery charger;
  • pliers or side cutters.

The process of repairing chipped plastic

To restore a chip if there is a broken part, you need to prepare nichrome wire. You can buy it or simply align a heating coil from an old heater, electric stove, fan heater or hair dryer.

The chipped part of the plastic is put back in place. If it falls off without support, then it can be glued with superglue. After this, the broken part is pressed with nichrome wire so that it passes crosswise through the seam and lies on the entire surface of the plastic.Behind the seam, terminals from a plugged-in charger or low-voltage transformer are installed on the edges of the wire. Part of the wire between the clamps will heat up and melt into the plastic.

Immediately after this, you need to disconnect one of the terminals and hold the wire with pliers or side cutters until the plastic hardens. Even easier, if someone can turn off the rectifier, then there is no need to remove the clamps.

If in some places the wire does not fit into the plastic, clamps are pressed along the edges of the protrusions to warm up this part. The hot wire is then pressed into the part.
Next, you need to bend the long end of the wire and fuse it perpendicular to the seam again, but slightly to the side. The presence of a loop will completely eliminate repeated breakage of the soldered part. If the width of the seam along the chip allows, then such loops are made on both sides. The more there are, the more reliable.

The parts of the part connected in this way will no longer come apart in this place. The method is very simple and fast. Unlike glue, it allows the part to be used immediately after restoration. Of course, the appearance of the surface will deteriorate, but this can be corrected. It is enough to fuse all the wire and remove the plastic deposits with sandpaper. The resulting grooves can be filled with putty and painted over. They can also be covered with plastic of the same color dissolved in acetone.

    There is one small BUT: This method is valid for thermoplastic plastics... For thermosetting plastics...: when you restore a part like this, call me - I haven’t been to the circus for a long time.. At least I’ll laugh...

    For greater reliability of such a connection, it is recommended to fuse the wire before how the plastic breaks.
