Every home probably has more than one power supply (charger) from various cell phone models lying around. All of them have an output voltage of 5 V. Naturally, it is possible to use such a source in the household, but sometimes there are not as many purposes as there are such sources with the same voltage. Is it possible to somehow change the voltage of this block? Then there would be more opportunities to use it.

In fact, this is quite simple to do, since all phone chargers, plus or minus, have the same circuit.

How to change the block voltage?

The output voltage can not only be reduced, but also increased within 3-15 V. And first, I’ll tell you how. On the board of each switching power supply, mainly in the center, there is a transformer. Visually, it divides the high-voltage part of the block and the low-voltage part. These parts are galvanically isolated, but have feedback through an optocoupler. On the low-voltage part of the board in the optocoupler circuit there is a zener diode, which is responsible for the output voltage level.

If you need to lower the voltage to 3 V, you can simply replace the zener diode and use it, but if you increase it, then you will need to replace the output filter capacitor with another one with a higher voltage.

I think you understand the concept of making changes. Let's get down to business.

Details

To change the voltage, specifically in this source, you will need the following names of parts:
  • Zener diode 12 V.
  • Capacitor 470 uF 25 V.

We increase the voltage of a pulse source with our own hands

We open the case. We find a zener diode. It is always located in the low voltage part of the block.

There is also a filter capacitor nearby.

You can first plug the unit into the network and check it, but of course it’s better to do this in advance while the lid is closed.

We solder the zener diode and capacitor.

We solder new ones instead. The most important thing is not to make a mistake with the polarity.

Once everything is ready, you can check it.

The values turned out to be slightly overestimated. You can try to select a zener diode for a lower voltage, but for this block it will do. Since where it will be used, an excess of 1-2 Volts is not at all critical.

If you have a different unit, say from a laptop, and it is built according to a different circuit, which uses a TTL431 stabilizer chip, and you want to change its voltage, then read how to do it here - https://enn.washerhouse.com/6059-kak-izmenit-vyhodnoe-naprjazhenie-bloka-pitanija-noutbuka.html

I needed a small power unit, I took apart two chargers and neither of them had a zener diode. How to increase the voltage in such blocks to 12 volts.

Modern power adapters are designed for a wide voltage range of 110-230V. This means that using the method described here, such an adapter can be completely converted to an output voltage twice as high, without rewinding the transformer. For example, at 10V instead of the original 5V. There may be problems with adapters that have a narrow range of mains voltage, for example, 180-240V. But any adapter can be tested for stability. This can be done even before remaking the adapter: you need to take the LATR and power the adapter through it with a reduced voltage. The number of times you can lower the mains voltage, the number of times you can increase the voltage of the converted adapter. Moreover, the stability of the adapter must be checked without load, with average and with maximum load.In this case, no extraneous sound should appear, the adapter should not get very hot, and the output voltage should not deviate significantly from the nominal one.

Is it okay that the secondary winding of the transformer is not designed for 12V? Without load it can and will be 12V. With a load there will be a specific voltage drop.

In short, I conducted experiments here with different blocks (chargers) on this topic. If the power supply is from a reputable manufacturer, then everything is as described by the author. Trans pulls 12v. and doesn't heat up. Naturally, the declared amperes are halved. If 1 A is written on the case, then at 12 V. You can load up to 500 mA. But cheap Chinese blocks are more than 10 century. they don't issue it. And in addition to the zener diode and capacitor, they will have to change the transistor (most often it costs 13001). It gets very hot and fails. It is advisable to put at least 13003, or better yet 13005, in a plastic case. Something like this.

Consider only one fact: when the output voltage increases to 12 volts, the output current will drop proportionally twice as much. Since these quantities are tied to Ohm’s laws, there is no way to fool physics. Somewhere we gain something more, while somewhere we lose twice as much in proportion to the increased value.
