When renovating a bathroom, toilet, as well as when decorating a kitchen backsplash, the cladding can be done not with tiles, but with ordinary gypsum plaster, simply properly decorated and painted with a protective compound. It's several times cheaper, but it's even better to look around than most tile collections. Let's take a closer look at this technology.

Tile simulation process
The walls must be plastered before decorative finishing. It is necessary to display smooth planes and right angles. After drying, the walls are primed.
Then the gypsum plaster is mixed to the consistency of thick sour cream.
It is applied with a wide spatula to one wall from top to bottom in a layer of 3-5 mm. Approximately 1-2 m of wall is plastered at a time.
While the plaster is fresh, you need to create a texture on it by applying and pulling away with a metal float or trowel. The pattern should be chaotic, so the direction of the trowel can be changed, as well as the pressing force.
After applying the texture, you need to plaster the next area and also decorate it. You should try to complete one wall in one approach, otherwise no visible transition will be achieved.
When the plaster stops sticking, its pattern should be smoothed with a wet spatula. There is no point in trying to make everything perfect at once. You need to quickly go over the entire wall, and then do it with a wet spatula again as often as necessary. The task is simply to remove the protrusions of the plaster, but preserve the depressions.
Next you need to cut out the imitation seams. To do this, a rule is applied according to the level and the plaster is cut off. This is done with a homemade scraper. It can be cut from profile trim.
If the speed of work is low and the plaster has set, then it is better to cut with a cutter turned from a file.
When the plaster has dried, it needs to be painted in 2 layers with a deep penetration primer tinted in the desired color. The interval between layers is at least 2 hours. The primer is applied with a roller.
The seams need to be painted over with a small brush using primer tinted in a darker color. This will make the tiles stand out better.
When the walls are dry after priming, they need to be made moisture resistant by applying optically transparent epoxy resin. This is done with a small velor roller. It is applied in a thin layer so that there are no smudges. Its consumption for 15 sq.m of walls turned out to be 800 ml, so you need to buy it with approximately the same calculation.
The result is beautiful, moisture-resistant walls with a slight gloss and perfect seams.
