When performing his professional duties, a welder, due to the specific features of this type of activity, is exposed to several hazardous factors. Among them: electric shock, burns from molten metal, damage to the organs of vision by ultraviolet radiation from an open arc, gas poisoning when the electrode coating burns, etc. Also, splashes of molten metal can cause ignition of materials and a fire. To prevent all this from happening, you must follow 5 simple rules of safety and organization of welding work.

Rule 1: Use dry electrodes and store them properly

Coating electrodes for manual arc welding, due to its porosity, quickly draws moisture from the atmosphere and turns the welding process into a real torture.

If you use a thermal pencil case equipped with a heating element and a thermostat, then this problem will not interfere with the welder’s productive and safe work. Also, already dried electrodes can be stored in thermos cases that have only a heat-insulating inner coating.

Rule 2: Use a full-length welding helmet for the job

Welding glasses protect only the eyes from the ultraviolet rays of the arc.

When working for a long time with glasses, ultraviolet radiation can damage the skin of the face, ranging from redness, as in tanning, to deep burns with subsequent death.

Therefore, it is better and safer to use a welding mask, which protects the eyes and skin of the face not only from ultraviolet radiation, but also splashes of metal, slag and scale.

Rule 3: use special clothing for welding work

It is strictly not recommended to carry out welding work in ordinary clothes, especially those made of highly flammable material.

This can lead not only to damage to clothing, but also to dangerous burns to the body. Before starting work, the welder must put on trousers and a jacket made of canvas fabric or genuine leather (split leather, less often yuft).

Rule 4: use special shoes or protective covers

When it is not possible to work in overalls and shoes, you should, in particular, use welder’s foot protection in the form of covers with ties or Velcro made of fire-resistant material, which reliably protect the area of the foot, instep and lower leg, protecting against metal splashes and sparks getting into the shoes .

Rule 5: Use work area ventilation

If there is no ventilation system at the welding station or at the place where welding work is carried out, portable ventilation devices should be used to remove gases harmful to humans from welding as a result of metal melting and burnout of the electrode coating from the working area. This will protect the welder’s respiratory organs from damage and the acquisition of occupational chronic diseases.
