Finishing putty is used to create smooth walls. The material is applied to the surface in a thin layer before painting. It often happens that incorrectly mixed finishing putty can ruin the appearance of the walls and make them porous.
As a result, the paint on the walls will not lie evenly and will spoil the completion of the renovation in the apartment. How to properly mix gypsum putty so that there are no lumps?
Required:
- bucket;
- putty;
- pure water;
- putty knife.
Mix the finishing gypsum putty:
Pour water into a clean bucket. You don’t need to pour a lot; dilute as much gypsum putty as you need in the near future, without reserve. The material dries out very quickly and becomes unusable during long-term storage.
By hand or using a putty knife, gradually pour the putty into the bucket of water. Use quality material such as Turkish putty to get a perfect result.
Gypsum is a free-flowing and airy substance, so it must be given time to absorb liquid. Add putty in portions so that no lumps form.Move the bucket periodically to evenly distribute the substance in the water.
It is difficult to accurately calculate the proportions of water and putty. Follow the rule: when the water covers the gypsum putty by about 4-5 mm. – stop, no more material is needed. Leave the plaster in the water for 3 minutes until it is completely saturated with liquid.
After 3 minutes, mix the gypsum putty with a construction mixer. The mass turns out homogeneous, without lumps. This is not visible to the naked eye.
It’s easy to check the homogeneity of the mixture: use a narrow spatula to place a small amount of the mixture onto a long spatula and spread it. The putty is applied in an even layer.
This method of mixing putty will provide you with perfect, even walls. After mixing the gypsum with a mixer, there is no need to wait time; the material can be used immediately.
On a note!
If the mixture turns out to be runny, do not add dry putty to the already mixed one. The gypsum that is in the water has not yet been saturated with moisture. As a result, lumps form and the batch is not homogeneous.
After each mixing, be sure to rinse the bucket or container in which you mix the plaster. The dry particles of gypsum remaining on the walls of the container fall into a new batch, forming lumps.
