Even old jigsaw files that are unsuitable for regrinding practically do not lose their original physical and mechanical characteristics. They are still hard and durable, quite elastic and resistant to external influences. Therefore, they are still suitable for use for other purposes, while helping to expand the functionality of the jigsaw.

Will need

In order to give old jigsaw files a “new life”, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:
  • wooden block;
  • an old hot pad;
  • Super glue;
  • sandpaper;
  • plastic pipe;
  • jigsaw

We will have to work: with a square and a pencil, a circular saw, scissors, a knife, a hammer, a glue gun, a grinder and a hacksaw for plastic.

The process of “reviving” old files

Using a square and a pencil, mark it on a wooden block, and then cut off a 10 mm thick strip with a circular saw, which we divide into two halves.

We tear off the top layer from the old hot plate and cut off the damaged areas with scissors.From the remaining whole fragment we cut out two strips corresponding in length and width to the halves of the plank.

Using superglue, glue them to the surfaces of the half-planks. Next, we use scissors to cut out strips of sandpaper that are exactly the same size and also glue them on top of the material already on the planks.

We fix the old file into the jigsaw as standard, move it to the extreme retracted position and mark on it the level of the bottom of the tool sole. We apply a file longitudinally in the middle to the back side of the plank, aligning the mark with its end. We tap the file on the back with a hammer until it enters evenly and is firmly fixed in the wood.

To increase the strength of the connection between the cutting part of the file and the wooden base, apply glue from a glue gun along the perimeter of the contact and let it harden.

While the glue hardens, we cut the plastic pipe clamped in a vice from one end in the longitudinal direction with a grinder and clean the cut with a knife. We insert the cutting part of the reciprocating saw into it, helping ourselves by lightly tapping the saw blade and shank with a hammer.

We also apply glue along the contact line between the saw and the plastic pipe.

We cut the pipe at the end of the reciprocating saw with a small margin. Apply superglue to the remaining part of the plastic with a reciprocating saw and cover its surface with sandpaper, cutting off the excess with scissors.

We install the shank of an old saw, on the teeth of which a wooden strip with sandpaper glued is attached, into the jigsaw. As a result, we get a tool with which it is easy to process square or rectangular holes in wooden workpieces.
By securing a saw shank with a plastic pipe covered with sandpaper in a jigsaw, we can easily process cylindrical holes and even make recesses in wood or wood-like materials.
