After sanitary pruning of trees and shrubs, a lot of thin branches accumulate, unsuitable for heating the stove or preparing barbecue. They have to be dried in bulk for months and then burned. An alternative method is to chop such branches into mulch. To do this, you need a garden shredder, which you can make yourself.

Materials:

  • single-phase electric motor 0.75 kW 3 thousand rpm;
  • tractor mower blade segments – 2 pcs.;
  • sheet steel 2 mm and 4-8 mm;
  • profile pipe 20x20 mm;
  • reinforcement 8 mm;
  • pipe 40-50 mm;
  • M6 bolts with nuts – 2 pcs.;
  • M8 bolts with nuts – 8 pcs.

The process of making a homemade wood chipper

The chopper consists of an electric motor on a support, a chamber with a feeding hopper and a rotor with knives. The manufacturing process of the device should begin with welding the motor stand. The easiest way is to make a support in the form of a stool. The stand itself is a steel plate. Its legs are made from profile pipe. For rigidity, they need to be strengthened by welding jumpers from reinforcement.

After welding the table, you need to make a front mount on it to screw the motor stator.It uses a steel plate with a cutout for the electric motor housing. It is welded to the table at a right angle. In addition to mounting the motor, it will also be used as the rear wall of the chopper chamber.

Next you need to make a chopper rotor with a heavy flywheel. The flywheel is a disk cut from thick sheet steel. A hole is made in it corresponding to the parameters of the motor shaft. A tube with a diameter of 40-50 mm and a length of 60-80 cm is welded to the flywheel. Then a smaller disk, cut from the same steel as the flywheel, is welded to it. On the smaller disk, 4 holes are drilled with a 6 mm drill. Through them, 2 segments from the tractor mower are screwed to the rotor. The hole on the knives will first need to be drilled for M6 bolts. A weighted rotor is installed on the engine. It must be secured with a bolt and nut screwed into the end of the motor shaft.

Then, based on the size of the rotor, the shredder cover is made. When docked with the front engine mounting plate, it will form a working chamber in which grinding is carried out. The cover is a bent sheet steel cylinder with a slightly larger diameter and height than the rotor. On one side it is welded tightly, on the other side mounting eyes are welded to it. The lower side of the lid is cut out to drain the crushed mulch. A cutout is made in its front wall for welding a funnel bent from thin sheet steel. The funnel for loading whole branches should be fed from the left.

A chopper of this design, with such a weak single-phase motor, can easily cope with branches with a cross-section of up to 2 cm. Anything thicker cannot be chopped and is not needed, since this is already good firewood for grilling or lighting a boiler or stove.It should be borne in mind that any shredder works better with freshly cut branches. As soon as they dry out, they cut worse.
