For precise cutting of sheet material, it is most convenient to use a jigsaw rather than a manual jigsaw. Such a device can be assembled with your own hands based on the engine from a washing machine. The result is a trouble-free machine, much more reliable and cheaper than a purchased one.

Basic materials:

  • Corner 20x20 mm;
  • laminated chipboard;
  • bearing in a housing with an inner race diameter of 10 mm;
  • sheet steel 2-3 mm;
  • pipe 20x20 mm;
  • blank for turning 20-30 mm;
  • electric motor from a washing machine.

Jigsaw manufacturing process

A machine bed of any size is welded from the corners. There will be a table and a reciprocating mechanism on it.

Then a tabletop of a convenient shape is cut out of laminated chipboard. Holes are drilled in it and the frame, and threads are cut for fastening the table with screws.

An L-shaped lever is made from a profile pipe to limit the upper position of the saw blade. It is welded to the frame. At its end you need to weld 2 shafts with small bearings.The gap between the latter should allow the file to move only up and down without deflecting to the side

A box for the reciprocating mechanism with mounting eyes is welded from sheet steel. A bushing is welded into it for the movement of the jigsaw rod. A hole is made in the box for the crankshaft, and the bearing is screwed into the housing.

On a lathe, you need to turn the crankshaft with the flywheel with an eccentric to convert the rotational motion of the motor into a reciprocating one. A mini bearing is installed on the working part of the eccentric. The shaft is placed in a box.

To connect the eccentric to the rod, you need to use an adapter in the form of a piece of U-shaped profile. It is put on the crankshaft and connected to a rod passed through a bushing on the side of the box. At the end of the rod, a cut should be made in advance and a screw should be inserted to clamp the saw blades.

The mechanism is lubricated and closed with a lid. Then the box is screwed into the frame. The blade is clamped in the rod and the table is installed.

Next, you need to machine an extension onto the crankshaft to connect it to the electric motor. Its length is made so as to be able to screw the engine to the frame. The button to turn on the motor can be embedded in the upper lever.

Before use, it is advisable to paint the machine and screw it to a heavy base, then the vibration from it will be imperceptible. The result is very high-quality, convenient equipment.

The only inconvenience about it is that to change the files you have to unscrew the table, but this takes a minute.

    The most interesting thing is that the actual unit for transmitting rotational motion into reciprocating motion has been very insufficiently considered!

      It has almost the same crank mechanism as in all jigsaws. The only difference is that there is no gearbox (crank directly driven by the motor) and there is no counterweight to compensate for shaking.

      It is also worth noting the absence of a roller supporting the file from behind. Because of this, the file will rub against the steel angle between the bearings and overheat.
