To ensure that the gate and doors of utility rooms in a courtyard or country house are always closed, door latches are needed. Buying them in a store will cost you a pretty penny. In order not to waste money, you can make them yourself from waste materials and this does not require special knowledge, skills or experience.

The process of making a door latch for any doors and gates
We measure 5 cm from the ends of the piece of reinforcement and bend the ends on a bending machine at an angle of 90 degrees in one plane.
We install the reinforcement bracket vertically on a narrow strip with an offset to one end and fix the contact points. From the side further away from the bracket, measure 1.5 cm and put a mark.
We mark points on a narrow strip and drill two large holes under the bracket marks and one smaller one. We drill out the bushing to a larger diameter.
At the end of the bracket closer to the smaller hole we put a washer and a drilled bushing. We install the “legs” of the bracket in the large holes and weld them on the back side, and the washer to the bracket.
Moreover, the bushing should rotate freely on the “leg” of the bracket.
We lay the narrow strip with the bracket on the wide one and transfer the outline of the hole of the narrow strip to the surface of the wide one.
We drill a hole according to the mark, insert a round rod into it and weld it to a wide strip.
We put a narrow strip with a bracket on the rod, mark a mark on the rod slightly above the narrow strip and shorten it along this mark.
We flatten the protruding part of the rod with a hammer so that the parts remain in engagement, but at the same time have relative movement around the rod.
After bending the end of the strip by 90 degrees and cutting it off, we get an L-shaped part.

Once again we bend the strip, but this time by 180 degrees, and then we bend the long end of the strip also at a certain angle. The result is a curved hook.
We weld the L-shaped part to the wide strip under the narrow one so that it becomes a limiter when the strip is rotated around its axis. We weld the straight end of the hook to the bushing tangentially when the narrow strip lies on the stop.
We put a wide washer on the groove of the round part, cut off the raised part of the groove above the washer for further welding. We place the round part with its base in the center of a 4x4 cm steel square and weld it.
In the square piece and wide strip at the corners, drill holes for fasteners.We fix the first part on the vertical post of the door frame, the second - on the door leaf.
When the end of the narrow strip is lifted up, the curved hook wraps around the round piece of the assembly on the door post.
If you now lower the narrow strip into the stopper, the door leaf will be securely closed. To open the door, it is enough to lift the strip with the handle and disengage the hook from the round part.
