Anti-rain, sold in car dealerships or along roads by street vendors at a price of 150 rubles per bottle, contains isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol), polydimethylsiloxane (silicone) and dye.

Such a simple composition can be easily prepared at home from ordinary store-bought antifreeze, silicone oil PMS-100 or PMS-200, differing only in viscosity, or silicone lubricant in the form of a spray in an aerosol can.

How to make anti-rain/anti-ice

According to chemical reference books, silicone does not completely mix with isopropyl and ethyl alcohol, and does not dissolve at all in methyl alcohol. It also mixes reluctantly with non-freezing liquid, partially dissolving and partially precipitating.

At first glance, it seems that the silicone, after vigorously shaking the container, seems to dissolve completely, but after standing for an hour, it is visually clear that a small part of the silicone still has not dissolved. Silicone spray from an aerosol can is also incompletely soluble in ethanol.

Add 0.5 cubic centimeters to a 5-liter bottle with anti-freeze silicone and after vigorous shaking, the silicone seemed to completely dissolve in such a relatively large volume of antifreeze liquid. Pour the resulting two-component mixture of antifreeze liquid and a small amount of silicone into the empty car glass washer reservoir.

But let’s first check our mix by first spraying water on a clean car glass that has not been treated with the resulting solution. You can see how the water lingers on the glass, and its drops reluctantly roll off the glass surface. At the same time, the road is not very clearly visible through the windshield while driving.

Now let’s spray the newly dried glass with our homemade anti-rain and turn on the windshield wipers. There are practically no whitish streaks left after the windshield wipers operate. From the outside, the glass looks absolutely normal and without a greasy coating.

We also spray the glass with water from a spray bottle, which has been pre-treated with our mixture of anti-freeze and silicone. It can be seen that now drops of moisture roll off the glass more actively and in abundance, and the road has become better visible when driving. At a speed of 60-70 km/h, raindrops are easily removed by the oncoming air flow. No glare is visible on the windshield at night after treatment with a mixture made from anti-freeze liquid and silicone.
