In order not to waste money on buying iron scissors in a store, you can make them yourself from two used ball bearings and a piece of an old channel. This does not require any theoretical knowledge or professional skills. It is enough to be able to handle ordinary tools for working with metal.

Will need

Materials:

  • a piece of old channel;
  • 2 rolling bearings;
  • round head hex bolts and washers;
  • 2 bushings with an annular protrusion at one end;
  • round pipe bent at 90 degrees;
  • spray paint.

Tools: a bench vise, a caliper, a grinder, a welding machine, a drilling machine, a tap with a driver, 2 large nuts and a short pin, an adjustable wrench, etc.

The process of making universal metal scissors with your own hands

Using a caliper, mark the midline on the back of the channel and use a grinder to cut the channel along it into 2 equal parts. We reduce the width of the back halves by half, cutting off the corresponding strips to length with a grinder. We round all the corners of the blanks obtained from the channel.

We place one workpiece against the other with its legs and turn the upper one around a common angle relative to the lower one by the calculated angle and tack it in two places by welding.

We drill 3 holes in the contact area of the workpieces and cut threads into them with a tap.

We connect the workpieces with three bolts with round hexagon heads. At the free ends of the channel blanks, taking into account the geometric dimensions of the bearings, we also drill holes and cut threads into them.

We fix a large nut in a vice with a short pin screwed into it, the diameter of which corresponds to the internal holes of the bearings. We put the bearings on the stud one by one, tighten them with a second nut and grind the end of the outer ring of the bearings with a grinder to the height of the chamfer or rounding radius.

We secure the bearings using bushings with annular projections and bolts so that they are in contact with the facing sides of the outer rings. If a gap is found between the ends, then to eliminate it, we place the required number of washers under the bolt closest to the bearings between the channel blanks and tighten the fastening bolts again.

Using a grinder, we cut off a part from a pipe smoothly bent at 90 degrees and weld it to the outside of the workpiece in the longitudinal direction. We paint homemade scissors in 2 colors with spray paint in accordance with safety and ergonomic rules.

To cut sheet metal, we place it between the bearings and move the scissors in the direction of cutting, i.e. forward.
