The table we want to talk about today is a comfortable combination of a barbecue and a dining table for a large company. In its middle there is a brazier, on which everyone can cook what they like. This innovation will not leave indifferent even the most picky eaters and vegetarians.
Product Specification
The table is designed for 12 people. Its dimensions: 250cm x 120cm.
To make a table you will need:
- Profile pipe 60x60 mm – 14.5 m.
- Profile pipe 60x30 mm – 3.2 m.
- Sheet metal, thickness 1-2 mm.
- Plywood 18-20 mm.
- Self-tapping screws, wood glue, heat-resistant sealant.
- Plastic plugs for corrugated pipes 60x60 mm – 4 pcs.
- Sheet of thermal insulation wool.
- Flat slate.
- Primer, varnish, solvent.
The tools are as follows:
- Grinder (angle grinder).
- Electric milling machine (slotting cutters, semicircular molding cutters).
- Circular saw or jigsaw.
- Grinder machine.
- Electric welding, plasma cutter.
- Drill or screwdriver.
- Spray gun, compressor for finishing.
- Hand tools are standard for every home workshop.
Making a table frame
The table frame consists of a frame and four legs made of 60x60 corrugated pipe.We start making it with a frame whose dimensions are 220x100 cm.
We cut the workpieces with a grinder (angle grinder) or a miter saw. We cut the ends of the blanks for corner welded joints into miter cuts at 45 degrees.
For more accurate welding, the frame parts should be aligned evenly in the same plane on the floor or work table. After tackling, scald the joints. We strengthen the internal space of the frame with additional guides, which form an area for the barbecue tray.
We place the table legs in the corners. Their length is 73 cm. Having adjusted the right angle in several planes, we weld the joint. It will be more convenient to clean all the joints with a grinding wheel if you place the table on legs.
Now you can place a sheet of plywood on top and turn it into a tabletop. To do this, we cut it to the size of the table, round off the ends of the sheet with an electric router, and use a semicircular cutter to cut the outer edge along the entire perimeter of the workpiece. It's time to try on the plastic plugs on the ends of the legs.
Preparing the barbecue area
Having decided on the size of the tray, we select the middle of the tabletop for it using an electric router. We make a container for coals from sheet steel in the form of a box with an open top. Individual elements can be cut by welding or using an angle grinder cutting wheel.
Having welded the joints of the box, we bend its edges so that it does not fall into the table niche, but at the same time is removable. All that remains is to clean the welded joints, making them more aesthetically pleasing.
Covering table parts
From the remaining plywood we make the covering of the visible areas of the table - the barbecue box and the legs. Sheathing elements can be cut using a circular saw or jigsaw. You can tighten the sheathing using wood glue or moisture-resistant PVA, additionally strengthening the connections with nails or self-tapping screws.
Preparing to assemble all parts
We prepare the tabletop for fastening by first making holes in it from the front side. We expand them with a feather drill to fit the wide heads of the fastening bolts. You can also cover the table frame in the area where the tabletop joins with flat slate pads. We round the plywood leg lining with a milling cutter and finish it with vibration sanding. Now you can safely put them on the legs, coat the metal with liquid nails, and close them with plastic plugs.
Thermal insulation of barbecue box
Since we are talking about an open fireplace with coals, the container under it needs protection from fire. Sheet metal can get very hot, and to prevent the plywood or guests’ knees from getting burned, we will line them with fire-resistant wool along the entire inside of the box. Just a few centimeters of this heat-resistant material is enough to insulate heat from the fryer. We cover it with sheets of flat slate secured with self-tapping screws. We seal the joints with high-temperature sealant for fireplaces and chimneys.
We fasten the tabletop to the frame using furniture bolts with wide heads. A vibration sander will help prepare the plywood surface for finishing. The recesses from the mounting bolts on the surface of the table can be filled with epoxy resin or a suitable sealant.
To finish the table we use varnish. The optimal tool for applying varnish is a spray bottle with a compressor unit. If the surface of the plywood is primed, one coat of varnish will be enough to obtain an ideal coating.
A lid has also been made, with which you can close the hole by stinging the roasting pan when you don’t need to fry anything, but just sit with friends at a large table.
Place the meat on the grill.
The table is ready, all that remains is to fill the barbecue box with burning coals, place grates and food on it, and enjoy live communication in friendly company.
