After cutting down a tree, a stump remains, which, even with a living root, produces shoots for many years. Usually, to get rid of it, you need to dig it up along with the roots, which can take several hours or even days. It is much easier and more accurate to pull out the stump using a jack.
What you will need:
- large turnkey screws – 2-4 pcs.;
- powerful chain;
- bricks;
- thick timber;
- jack, preferably from a truck.
The process of removing a stump using a jack
A deep hole is drilled into the side of the stump. A large hex head screw is screwed into it. On the back side of the stump, a second screw is screwed in opposite it.
Then a looped powerful chain is thrown onto the stump and clings to the protruding heads.
A thick beam or planed tree trunk is laid on the stump. Bricks are placed under its edges on one side, and a jack is placed on the other. With the second chain you need to tie the lower chain to the beam. If the jack has a narrow base, it is necessary to place a board under it, otherwise it will go into the ground when lifted instead of lifting the stump.
Now, when you lift the jack, the stump will be pulled up along with the root.Having reached the top point of the lift, you need to place more bricks, boards or other supports under the beam to raise the lever higher. Due to this, from the side of the jack it will go down.
After squeezing the jack all the way again, you also need to add boards or bricks under the opposite edge of the lever. Instead, you can put a large wooden block, a metal stand or something else. The main thing is that the support is reliable and does not tip over under load.
The support on the side opposite to the jack increases until the stump rises up and the root comes out with it or comes off. If this does not happen, then you can simply saw it from below as soon as normal access to it opens. If you do this with a chainsaw, it is important to avoid the chain catching the ground, as this will cause it to lose its sharpness.
You can use a jack to pull out small and medium-sized stumps, even if they are still alive. For large stumps, you need to use other removal methods, as it is difficult to find a lever strong enough for such a heavy load. Even a thick beam will simply break from such a weight.
During work, it is important to try to avoid tilting the jack or stop, and also maintain a distance. If the beam tips over or slips, you can get injured, so you should not stand to the side of it. By taking all precautions, even working slowly and steadily, you can remove a stump in less than an hour, which is much faster and easier than using a shovel and ax.
